Frequently Asked Questions
Where Can I purchase LEAD-OUT® Paint Stripper? Where are you located?
LEAD-OUT® Paint Stripper is not sold in stores. You can purchase it on our website. Environmentally Helpful Products LLC is an internet marketing company specializing in innovative green products. We operate out of three home offices in Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, NY. Solucorp Industries and their subsidiary Integrated Fixation System Co., Inc. are located in West Nyack, NY.
How does LEAD-OUT® Paint Stripper work?
LEAD-OUT® Paint Stripper contains MBS, which is an EPA "SITE" (Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation) proven technology. MBS reacts with heavy metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium, zinc, and mercury at the molecular level. MBS transformes heavy metals into their sulfide forms, which is the most insoluble and non-leachable form. As an insoluble non-leaching compound, sulfides are not regulated by the EPA and can be disposed of as non-hazardous waste.
As a paint stripper, LEAD-OUT® breaks the chemical bonds between the paint and the surface underneath, then lifts the paint off the surface for easy removal.
How do you use LEAD-OUT® Paint Stripper?
LEAD-OUT® Paint Stripper is easy to use. Mix the gel stripper with the MBS powder to create a paste. Then brush or spray on to the painted surface. Heavy metals are rendered nonhazardous on contact, but you have to let it sit for at least five hours to begin stripping the paint. Once the paint is soft enough to be easily stripped, remove the paint with a scraper, clean the area, and dispose of the waste in any landfill. If you are a commercial enterprise, then you must obtain a TCLP test before disposing of the waste. See our Do-It-Yourself page for more info.
When can I expect to receive my order?
You can expect your order in 5-7 business days. If you placed your order between Friday afternoon and Monday morning, then the order will be processed on Monday. Allow extra time during holidays. A UPS or FedEx tracking number can be emailed to you upon request.
Will LEAD-OUT® remove paint off any surface?
LEAD-OUT® will remove lead paint from wood, brick, concrete, steel, iron, plaster, and virtually any other surface. When using LEAD-OUT® on metals make sure you wash the residue off with soap and water when you are done or you might tarnish the metal. We provide a low cost sample for testing.
Do you have to scrape the paint off with a metal scraper?
No. After allowing LEAD-OUT® to begin stripping the paint, you can wash it off with a hose or wipe it off with a damp sponge as well as scrape.
What is the VOC content?
LEAD-OUT® is a Zero-VOC product (0-0.25%). See the MSDS for more information.
I tested the residue after removing lead paint with LEAD-OUT®. Why did it test positive for lead?
Lead is an element (Pb), and there is no way to get rid of it. LEAD-OUT® turns hazardous lead into non-hazardous lead-sulfide, which is insoluble, unleachable, and inert. Lead test kits you buy at the hardward store will test positive for any type of lead whether hazardous or non-hazardous. Only an environmental diagnostic lab certified by the EPA to conduct TCLP tests can tell you if material contains hazardous lead or not.
What proportion should I mix the powder and the gel to make smaller batches?
1 pound MBS® powder to 1 gallon gel stripper. So you can mix 1/2 pound of powder with 1/2 gallon of gel to make a half gallon. Just keep it proportional and you can mix smaller batches of any size. When storing the left over, make sure the bags are closed and the lid is on tight.
Can you give me more detail about the coverage area?
100-120 square feet: Smooth surfaces, metal surfaces found in industrial paint removal, marine and boat paint removal, and some residential applications.
80-100 square feet: Most residential paint removal: renovation, preservation, etc.
60-80 square feet: Porous, rough surfaces, many layers of paint,
intricate wood-work: historic preservation, antique restoration, brick
or sheet rock surfaces.
Can I use a paint sprayer?
Yes. Use an airless paint sprayer for medium to heavy material with a tip size of at least 519 to spray LEAD-OUT® onto the surface. To avoid clumps that can clog your sprayer, strain the MBS® powder before loading the sprayer.
